Coed
Cae is a 'Bed and Breakfast' run by Graham and Jacky O’Hanlon
which is set in two acres of woodland overlooking the beautiful
Mawddach estuary in the southern reaches of the Snowdonia National
Park, North Wales.
The
B&B lies between Dolgellau and Barmouth in the scattered
village of Taicynhaeaf (pronounced Tie-can-hi-ev) at the head
of the Cwm-Mynach, the valley of the monks, historically owned
by nearby Cymer Abbey. We are close to the larger village of
Bontddu (approximately “Bonthy”), with the 17th
century George III Inn just across the bridge at Penmaenpool.
At
the heart of the B&B are two traditional Welsh cottages,
the oldest, Gwelfor, dates back more than 200 years. Of this
original part, the small slate stairway evident in the lounge
probably led to the original living quarters above a byre on
the ground floor. The uneven floor in the upstairs corridor
marks the transition between the two cottages, and the family
room at the northern end is part of a more recent addition.
We
have three guest bedrooms (one on
the ground floor), each with en-suite or private bathrooms and
a large first-floor balconied guest lounge. There is secure
storage for bikes, and space to allow wet kit to dry.
The
heart of life at Coed Cae is the farmhouse kitchen where industrial
quantities of tea are consumed, and tales of the day’s
adventures expand to fill the available space.
